Fresco Painting Workshop

Today we went to a Fresco painting workshop in Florence. We met Penny, Alan, and Susan. Penny and Susan were at the cafe where we met, so we walked to Alan's studio. We heard lots of little stories about the history of Florence. One of the stories I liked was the one about the girl accused of stealing two rings. In the story the people think a 14 year old girl stole two expensive rings and she was beheaded. It turns out a magpie stole the shiny stuff (rings) and hid them in the scale of justice in the Piazza.
Penny is friends with our maestro Alan, and she helped us understand a lot of how to do the technique. Susan was in the class with mom, Cassie, and I, she was helping out, but made a beautiful fresco painting.
Alan was our maestro, and he taught us chemistry about frescos which at some points I did not understand.
What we did to start was to trace the subject onto a tracing paper. Then we used a push pin to poke holes in the lines. On the holes we dabbed red powder, so the lines showed up on the plaster on the board.

Then we made a blackish brownish outline of the painting. Then we made grey and put it in the background.

The next thing was to make all different colours and put them where they were supposed to be. The colours on my picture were pretty dark. When we painted we had to go quickly because the plaster would dry because it is "fresh". We also had to go carefully because if we messed up we would never get it off. I think painting was fairly easy! Only from the painting part had a mess on my hands.

I loved doing Fresco paintings and hope to try them more often! That also was a great experience and I really appreciate mom taking us there.
